ABOUT ROYAL CARIBBEAN
The cruise line brand Royal Caribbean International (RCI), formerly known as Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL), was established in 1968 in Norway. Since 1997, it has operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Royal Caribbean Group. It is the largest cruise line by revenue and the second largest by passenger count, with headquarters in Miami, Florida, in the United States. By passengers and revenue, Royal Caribbean International controlled 19.2% of the global cruise market in 2018. It manages five of the world’s largest passenger ships. Twenty-six ships are currently in operation by the line as of January 2022, and four more are on order.
Three Norwegian shipping companies founded Royal Caribbean Cruise Line in 1968: Gotaas Larsen, I.M. Skaugen & Company, and Anders Wilhelmsen & Company Two years later, the Song of Norway, the first ship of the newly established line, entered service. The line added Nordic Prince to its fleet a year later, and in 1972, it added Sun Viking. The Song of Norway, Royal Caribbean’s first passenger ship, was extended in 1978. An 85-foot (26-meter) section was attached to the vessel’s severed center to accomplish this. In 1980, Nordic Prince was also stretched due to the work’s success.
