ABOUT RCN

RCN claimed 130 cable franchises and over 424,000 domestic customers in 2006. The RCN network was the 11th largest provider of cable Internet access in the United States in 2013 and covered approximately 3.8 million people. Its operations, along with those of Grande Communications and Wave Broadband, are managed by affiliate Patriot Media Consulting.

Developer David McCourt and Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc. created the Residential Communications Network (RCN) in 1993. Kiewit also owned MFS, a Competitive Access Provider (CAP). RCN purchased C-TEC, the parent company of Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Telephone, in a series of moves, and MFS sold RCN its small residential telephone operations. Worldcom later purchased MFS. The Telecom Act of 1996 made RCN/C-TEC a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC).
