ABOUT DICK’S SPORTING GOODS
Dick Stack, then 18 years old, started DICK’S Sporting Goods in 1948 while working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. Dick, an avid fisherman, was approached by the proprietor of the store to compile a list of items required to start a fishing tackle business. Dick was told by the owner that he was a dumb kid who didn’t know what he was doing after he offered his suggestions.
Dick quit right away due to his anger. He informed her of the situation when he went to his grandmother’s house, where he had spent a lot of time as a child. Dick’s grandmother inquired about the cost of building the store herself. Dick stated the price would be $300. After that, his grandmother went to the cookie jar where she kept her entire life’s savings, gave him $300, and she told him, “Do it yourself.” Dick opened a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton with that money and his unwavering dedication to his work. By the end of the 1970s, he had expanded his product line to include a lot of what is now available at DICK’S Sporting Goods.
