ABOUT TRACFONE

In 1996, Topp Telecom Inc., a prepaid mobile phone company, became TracFone Wireless, Inc. in Miami, Florida. David Topp and F.J. Pollak started it. Tracfone’s CEO was Pollak until his death in 2016. Topp received a significant injection of capital from Teléfonos de México (NYSE: TMX), formerly The largest telephone company in Mexico is TelMex. In exchange for acquiring a 55% controlling stake in the business, TelMex paid $57.5 million.

Topp Telecom became a subsidiary of América Móvil in 2000 after TelMex spun off their mobile unit. América Móvil acquired rival network Simple Mobile in 2012. Topp Telecom Inc. changed its name to TracFone Wireless Inc. in November 2000.

América Móvil purchased Page Plus Cellular, which had 1.4 million customers, in May 2013. Page Plus Cellular began operations as a subsidiary of América Móvil on January 6, 2014, after receiving regulatory approval.
