ABOUT PAYPAl

Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, and Luke Nosek started PayPal in December 1998 as Confinity, a company that made security software for handheld devices. However, it shifted its focus to a digital wallet after that business model failed. In 1999, the first version of the PayPal system for electronic payments was released.

Confinity and x.com, an online financial services company founded by Elon Musk, Harris Fricker, Christopher Payne, and Ed Ho in March 1999, merged in March 2000. Confinity’s development of a money transfer business was a source of optimism for Musk. Musk and X.com’s then-president and CEO, Bill Harris, disagreed about whether the money transfer business could succeed in the future, and Harris left the company in May 2000. Musk made the decision in October of that year to concentrate on PayPal at X.com instead of its other internet banking operations. In the same month, Peter Thiel took over for Elon Musk as CEO of X.com, which changed its name to PayPal in June 2001 and went public in 2002. The initial public offering (IPO) of PayPal brought in over $61 million and was priced at $13 per share.
