ABOUT METRO BY T-MOBILE

T-Mobile US owns the American prepaid wireless service provider and brand Metro by T-Mobile (formerly MetroPCS and also simply Metro). Previously, it used code-division multiple access (CDMA) to run the fifth largest mobile telecommunications network in the United States. The company’s services were merged into T-Mobile’s UMTS and LTE network following a reverse merger with T-Mobile US in 2013. As a part of the wireless service provider brands, Dish’s Boost Mobile, AT&T’s Cricket Wireless, and Verizon’s Visible are the primary competitors for Metro by T-Mobile.

Roger Linquist and Malcolm Lorang founded Metro in 1994 under the name General Wireless, Inc. The industry term “Personal Communications Service” was referred to as “PCS.” 2002 marked the initial launch of its service.

MetroPCS had approximately 1.5 million customers in the nation as of February 2005. The company had 21 licenses at the time, operating in Greater Miami, Tampa, Sarasota, New York City, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Sacramento. Later that year, the business expanded to Dallas and Detroit.
