ABOUT HOTWIRE

Hotwire is a travel website that sells vacation packages, hotel rooms, car rentals, and tickets for flights. It makes money by selling off travel inventory that hasn’t been used. Hotwire, Inc. is a subsidiary of the Expedia Group, which also owns and operates Classic Vacations, Expedia, Hotels.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, and Egencia. Its headquarters are in San Francisco, California.

Karl Peterson, Eric Grosse, Gregg Brockway, and Spencer Rascoff founded Hotwire in 2000. Texas Pacific Group (TPG), the leading private equity firm Karl Peterson used to work for, invested $75 million in Hotwire as its initial source of funding. Six major airlines were the first to offer Hotwire tickets, and they also invested in the company’s launch: United, United States Airways (now American), American Northwest (now Delta), Continental (now United), America West (now American), and United Purple Demon was Hotwire’s secret codename before it was officially released.
