ABOUT AIRBNB
An online marketplace that focuses on short-term homestays and experiences is run by Airbnb, Inc., whose headquarters are in San Francisco, California. A commission from each booking is collected by the company, which acts as a broker. Brian Chesky, Nathan Blecharczyk, and Joe Gebbia set up the company in 2008. AirBedandBreakfast.com, the company’s original name, is shortened to Airbnb. The company has been criticized for not having any rules and allowing rents to go up in homes.
Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, roommates and former classmates, decided to open a bed and breakfast by installing an air mattress in their living room after they moved to San Francisco in October 2007. Chesky’s former roommate Nathan Blecharczyk joined as Chief Technology Officer and the third co-founder of the new company, which they dubbed AirBed & Breakfast. Blecharczyk joined in February 2008. They developed a website that provided short-term housing and breakfast to individuals who were unable to book hotels in the crowded market. On August 11, 2008, the website Airbedandbreakfast.com made its official debut. During the Industrial Design Conference of the Industrial Designers Society of America in the summer of 2008, when visitors to the city had difficulty finding lodging, the founders saw their first customers.
