ABOUT AVIANCA

Low-cost Colombian airline Avianca S.A. is an acronym for Aerovias del Continente Americano S.A., which means “Airways of the American Continent.” Since its initial registration on December 5, 1919, under the name SCADTA, it has served as Colombia’s flag carrier. It has its main hub at El Dorado International Airport and its registered office in Barranquilla, Colombia. Its global headquarters are in Bogotá. Avianca is the flagship airline of a group of ten Latin American airlines that use a codesharing system to operate as one airline. After Chile’s LATAM, Avianca is the largest airline in Colombia and Latin America. Latin America’s most extensive network of destinations is provided by Avianca and its subsidiaries. Synergy Group, a South American holding company founded by Germán Efromovich and specializing in air transport, was the sole owner prior to the merger with TACA in 2010. It is recorded on the Colombia Stock Trade.

The carrier follows its set of experiences back to December 5, 1919, in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. The Colombo-German Company, also known as Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transportes Aéreos or SCADTA, was founded by Colombians Ernesto Cortissoz Alvarez-Correa (the airline’s first president), Rafael Mara Palacio, Cristóbal Restrepo, Jacobo Correa, and Aristides Noguera, and Germans Werner Kämmerer, Stuart Hosie, and Albert Tietj.
