ABOUT COPA AIRLINES
The flag carrier of Panama is Compaa Panamea de Aviación, S.A., also known as Copa or simply “Copa Airlines.” It has its headquarters in Panama City, Panama, and Tocumen International Airport serves as its primary hub. Copa is a member of Star Alliance and a subsidiary of Copa Holdings, S.A. AeroRepblica, which is now known as Wingo and was formerly known as Copa Airlines Colombia, is also owned and operated by the airline.
On June 21, 1944, the airline was founded as Compaa Panamea de Aviación—hence the name COPA—and began operations on August 15, 1947. It was started by a group of well-known investors from Panama with help from Pan American World Airways, which bought a 32% stake. It began with a small fleet of Douglas DC-3 aircraft for domestic flights. In the early 1970s, the airline began operating services to cities in Jamaica, Colombia, and Costa Rica on its first international flights. Copa operated Hawker Siddeley HS 748 and Lockheed L-188 Electra turboprop aircraft.
