In 1976, the Price Club brand’s first location in San Diego was in a converted airplane hangar on Morena Boulevard. After initially catering only to small businesses, the company discovered that catering to a select group of non-business members could significantly increase its purchasing power. That change kicked off the expansion of the warehouse club industry. Seattle became the first location for a Costco warehouse in 1983. In less than six years, Costco became the first company to reach $3 billion in sales. When Price Club and Costco merged in 1993, PriceCostco was a combined business with 206 locations and $16 billion in annual sales.
