ABOUT EXPEDIA

Expedia.com went live on October 22, 1996, as a Microsoft subsidiary.

As a public company, Microsoft spun off the business in 1999. Expedia’s CEO became Rich Barton.

USA Networks, Inc. acquired Expedia from Microsoft in July 2001.

Due to a dispute over how American’s fares and schedules appeared in the site’s search results, Expedia suspended listings for AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle Airlines, in December 2010. In April 2011, AMR and Expedia reached an agreement that allowed tickets to once again be sold through the aggregate site.

Expedia began accepting bitcoins in June 2014.

Expedia Group became the first global sponsor of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup beginning in the 2018-21 season. Hotels.com will end its sponsorship after the 2021-22 season, and Expedia will continue to do so until 2024.
