ABOUT GROUPON

Groupon is a global e-commerce marketplace founded in the United States that connects subscribers with local businesses by providing activities, travel, and goods and services in 13 nations. In November 2008, Groupon launched in Chicago, followed shortly thereafter by Boston, New York City, and Toronto. Groupon had 35 million registered users and was available in 150 North American cities, 100 European, Asiatic, and South American cities by October 2010. By the end of March 2015, Groupon had more than 425,000 active deals in 48 countries, nearly 48.1 million active customers, and served more than 500 cities worldwide.

Andrew Mason, a Pittsburgh native and former CEO, came up with the concept for Groupon. Eric Lefkofsky, his former employer, became interested in the concept, and he contributed $1 million to its development as seed money. The company was valued at $1.35 billion in April 2010. Groupon was “projecting that the company is on pace to make $1 billion in sales faster than any other business, ever,” according to a report that was conducted in December 2010 and published in Forbes magazine and the Wall Street Journal.
