With a 36 percent market share, it leads Enterprise Holdings and the Avis Budget Group as one of the three major rental car holding companies in the United States. Hertz operates in 160 countries in North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and New Zealand, making it one of the largest worldwide car rental companies in terms of sales, locations, and fleet size.
Walter L. Jacobs, a native of Chicago, Illinois, established the Hertz Corporation, which was formerly known as Rent-a-Car Inc. in 1918. Twelve Model T Fords served as the foundation for this modest rental business. Jacobs’ fleet grew to 600 vehicles in five years, bringing in approximately $1 million annually in revenue. Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company was purchased by John D. Hertz in 1923 after he developed an interest in the brand. After that, it got the new name Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System. Until 1961, Jacobs held the position of president and chief operating officer at Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System.
