ABOUT KOHL’S
Kohl’s, stylized in all caps, is a department store retail chain in the United States that is owned and operated by Kohl’s Corporation. With 1,165 locations and stores in every state except Hawaii, it is the largest department store chain in the United States as of December 2021. Maxwell Kohl, a Polish immigrant who moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1927, started the company by opening a corner grocery store. After that, it grew to be a successful local chain, and in 1962, the company opened its first department store. While the Kohl family was still in charge, British American Tobacco Company acquired a controlling stake in the business in 1972. In 1979, BATUS Inc. purchased the business from British American Tobacco and made it public in 1992.
Maxwell Kohl, who had been running traditional grocery stores since 1927, built his first supermarket in 1946. It was the first in a chain of Kohl’s Food Stores in southeastern Wisconsin. Kohl opened his first department store in Brookfield, Wisconsin, in September 1962, after transforming Kohl’s Food Stores into the largest supermarket chain in the Milwaukee area. He put Kohl’s between discounters and higher-end department stores by selling everything from sports equipment to engine oil to candy.
