ABOUT NORDSTROM
The luxury department store chain Nordstrom, Inc. was established in 1901 by John W. Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin and has its headquarters in Seattle, Washington. A second Nordstrom’s shoe store opened in 1923, and the first Wallin & Nordstrom store only sold shoes. By 1971, the expanding Nordstrom Best chain had transformed into the full-line Nordstrom that it is today. It first started selling clothing in 1963. In 1973, the company established its off-price Nordstrom Rack division. Over the years, it expanded its full-line and off-price divisions across the United States before entering Canada in 2014. It faces competition from Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue in the American market.
Wallin & Nordstrom, a shoe store that opened in 1901, was eventually chosen by Nordstrom. The nearby shoe repair shop was owned by Carl F. Wallin, one of the store’s co-founders. Everett W. (1903), Elmer J. (1904), and Lloyd N. Nordstrom were three of John and Hilda’s five children who would go on to run the family business.
