In 1937, Joseph Lewis and Jack Green established Progressive as Progressive Insurance Company. By covering drivers who posed a greater risk, the company created a niche in 1956. Peter B. Lewis, the son of Joseph Lewis, and his mother completed a leveraged buyout of Progressive in 1965 by borrowing $2.5 million and pledging their majority stake as collateral. The company’s written premiums exceeded $1 billion in 1987. That figure surpassed $20 billion in 2016.
