ABOUT RADIOSHACK

RadioShack had over 8,000 RadioShack or Tandy Electronics locations worldwide in the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada at its height in 1999. In areas of Asia, North Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, the company granted licenses to third parties to use the RadioShack brand name.

Theodore and Milton Deutschmann, brothers, started the business in 1921 under the name Radio Shack because they wanted to provide equipment for the still-developing field of amateur radio (ham radio). At 46 Brattle Street, in the heart of downtown Boston, the brothers opened a one-store retail and mail-order business. The name “Radio Shack” came from the name of a small wooden building used to store ship’s radio equipment. The name, the Deutschmanns thought, was appropriate for a store that would supply hams (amateur radio operators) and radio officers on ships. Bill Halligan, a former employee who later founded the Hallicrafters company, came up with the name idea. The term was already in use, and hams still use it to describe where their stations are.
