ABOUT ROKU
Roku, Inc. (/roku/ ROH-koo) is a publicly traded American company that makes a variety of digital media players for streaming video. Its headquarters are in San Jose, California. In addition to licensing its hardware and software to other businesses, Roku also operates an advertising business. Anthony Wood, the founder of ReplayTV, established Roku in October 2002 as a limited liability company (LLC). In Japanese, the suffix “roku” refers to “six,” denoting that Roku is Wood’s sixth company.
Wood was promoted to vice president of Netflix in April 2007. In February 2008, Netflix invested $6 million in a new Roku company based in Palo Alto, California, to build a player after the company decided not to build its own. Later in 2008, the headquarters of the company relocated to Silicon Valley, further south in Saratoga, California. In October 2008, Menlo Ventures announced a new round of venture capital funding for the company. In 2009, a second round of approximately $8.4 million was made public. The company made the announcement in 2015 that it would sublease the buildings in Los Gatos, California, from Netflix.
