ABOUT SEARS

The American department store chain Sears, Roebuck, and Co. (/srz/ SEERZ), more commonly referred to as Sears, was established in 1892 by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck. It was reincorporated in 1906 by Richard Sears and Julius Rosenwald. The company began as a mail-order catalog business before transitioning to opening retail locations in 1925, the first of which was in Chicago. Sears Holdings was formed after the management of Kmart, an American big-box discount chain, purchased the company in 2005 and completed the merger. Sears was the largest retailer in the United States throughout the 1980s. It was the 31st largest in 2018. On October 15, 2018, the parent company of Sears filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after several years of declining sales. On January 16, 2019, it made the announcement that it had won the bankruptcy auction and that only 425 of its stores, including 223 Sears stores, would remain open.

From 1973 to 1995, Sears had its headquarters in the Sears Tower in Chicago. It now has its headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. In 2021, Sears made the announcement that it would be selling its headquarters complex in Hoffman Estates.

Richard Warren Sears was born in Stewartville, Minnesota, in 1863, to a wealthy family that later relocated to Spring Valley, which is nearby. Shortly after losing the family fortune in a speculative stock deal in 1879, his father passed away. Sears worked as a railroad station agent in North Redwood and Minneapolis before moving across the state.
