ABOUT ESOUTHWEST AIRLINES

Southwest Airlines Co., more commonly referred to as Southwest, is the largest low-cost airline in the world and one of the major airlines in the United States. It has scheduled service to 121 destinations in the United States and 10 additional countries and has its headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Southwest had more domestic passengers than any other airline in the United States as of 2018.

Herbert Kelleher and Rollin King founded Southwest Airlines in 1966. In 1967, the company was incorporated as Air Southwest Co. Three other airlines filed lawsuits to try to stop the company from implementing its planned strategy of lowering prices by flying only within Texas and being exempt from various regulations. After the lawsuits were settled in 1970, the airline became Southwest Airlines Co. in 1971 and began operating regularly scheduled flights between Dallas Love Field and Houston and Love Field and San Antonio. In 1975, Southwest began flying to a number of additional cities within Texas, and in 1979, it began flying to states adjacent to Texas. In the 1990s, service to the East and Southeast began. From 1973 to 2019, Southwest made a profit for 47 consecutive fiscal years.
