ABOUT TARGET

Target Corporation is an American department store chain with its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since 2018, it has been known by its stylized lowercase name, Target. It is a part of the S&P 500 Index and the seventh largest retailer in the United States.

In 1962, Dayton’s department store in Minneapolis started Target as a discount store. As part of the Dayton-Hudson Corporation, it began nationwide store expansion in the 1980s and introduced new store formats in the 1990s under the Target brand. As a player in the cheap-chic market, the company has achieved success.

In 2000, the parent company changed its name to Target Corporation, and in 2004, it sold off its last department store chains. In the early 2010s, it experienced a significant and widely publicized security breach of customer credit card data as well as the failure of its short-lived Target Canada subsidiary. However, it experienced renewed success as a result of its expansion into urban markets within the United States.
