ABOUT WALMART

Walmart Inc., formerly Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is a multinational American retail corporation with headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. It operates a chain of hypermarkets (also known as supercenters), discount department stores, and grocery stores. In 1962, Sam Walton and James “Bud” Walton established the business in nearby Rogers, Arkansas. On October 31, 1969, the company was incorporated under the Delaware General Corporation Law. Additionally, it owns and manages retail warehouses for Sam’s Club.

Sam Walton, a businessman and former employee of J. C. Penney, purchased a Ben Franklin store from the Butler Brothers in 1945. He portrayed it as a crusade for the consumer and focused primarily on selling products at low prices to achieve higher volume sales at lower profit margins. He suffered setbacks as a result of the unusually high lease price and branch purchase, but he was able to locate suppliers at a lower cost than other stores and, as a result, beat out his rivals in pricing.

In his first year as owner, sales increased by 45% to US$105,000, rising to $140,000 the following year and $175,000 the following year. The store was making $250,000 in sales in its fifth year. Walton opened a new store with the name “Walton’s Five and Dime” at 105 N. Main Street in Bentonville after the location’s lease came to an end and he was unable to agree on a new one. The Walmart Museum now occupies that store.
