American Airlines cancel policy
It can be hard to read through all the terms and conditions in order to fully understand airline policies. Here are the key points of American Airlines’ flight cancellation policy.
All tickets: Cancellation Policy: Tickets can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours after purchase if booked less than two days prior to departure.
Tickets are non-refundable. Tickets can be cancelled to receive a full refund. Online cancellations are possible.
Non-refundable tickets: No refund after the 24-hour grace. If you cancel your flight prior to departure, the unutilized value of eligible fares can be applied toward a future flight, provided that the new flight is within one year from the date of issue.
You can only make one change to your trip at the moment.
This policy applies only to American Airlines purchases. You must contact American Airlines directly if you purchased your ticket through a travel agency or website.
American Airlines cancellation fees
American Airlines doesn’t charge cancellation fees. American Airlines does not charge cancellation fees for domestic or short-haul international flights.
These fares do not include basic economy fares that were booked after April 1, 2021. They cannot be refunded or changed.
Non-refundable cancellations are subject to a refund up to the amount of the original purchase. Flight credits can be used for this purpose. You may not be charged cancellation fees, but you could still owe the difference in price if your flight is more expensive.
American will issue a trip credit if your new flight is cheaper than your original ticket.
How to cancel an American Airlines Flight
After logging in to American Airlines at aa.com you will be able to click the “Your Trips” link from the menu.

- Choose the trip that you want to cancel from your wish list.
- Select “Cancel trip”:
- Then confirm your cancellation.
American Airlines should immediately restore your miles for award tickets. A travel voucher should be issued to cover the cost of tickets.
American Airlines refund policy
American Airlines’ policy on refunds is quite straightforward, but it is very restrictive.
You can get a refund to your original payment method for any refundable ticket at any time prior to departure. You can request a refund if you purchased your ticket directly from American Airlines. However, if your ticket was purchased from an agent (either a traditional or online travel agent like Expedia), you will need to contact them directly.
Tickets that are non-refundable cannot be refunded after 24 hours. This is only if the following conditions apply:
- Schedule changes lasting more than four hours.
- Death of the passenger, or a traveling companion
- Passenger orders from the military
American Airlines requests a refund
After you request a refund, you will need to contact the Refund Department.

- Click on the “Contact Refunds” link under “Customer Support”.
- You can voice your concerns regarding a refund here. However, this form is not for requesting a refund. It is used to communicate with the refund team.

- To make the changes you desire, enter your record locator number.
- Members of AA Advantage can log in to their account and make changes to reservations under “My Trips/Check-In”.
