The Delta Air Lines, Inc., commonly referred to simply as Delta, is one the largest airlines in the United States. It is also a legacy carrier. Delta, one of the oldest airlines still in operation in the world, is headquartered in Atlanta. Along with its subsidiaries, affiliates and regional affiliates, it operates more than 5,400 daily flights and serves 325 destinations across 52 countries on six continents.
You may have made a booking but need to cancel due to an emergency. Delta supports flight cancellations and refunds.
Cancel your flight
You have two options: cancel your ticket before departure or request a refund if the ticket is refundable. If you have booked within the last 24 hour, learn more about our 24-Hour risk-free cancellation. Cancellations of Main Cabin tickets or higher prior to departure will not affect the ticket’s value. Check your Basic Economy ticket carefully to determine if you can cancel your ticket before departure to receive an e-Credit.
Cancel a Non-Refundable Ticket
In some cases, cancellation charges may be applied to non-refundable tickets. Any value remaining will be given as a credit which can be used to purchase another ticket.
How to cancel a non-refundable ticket:
- You must cancel your ticket before you leave. Tickets that are not cancelled or changed prior to departure will lose their value.
- Log in to access My Trips or find your trip.
- Choose the trip that you wish to cancel.
- Click the “Need to Cancel?” button.
- Follow the steps by clicking on ‘Start Flight Cancellation.’
No Cancellation Fee
The following tickets do not qualify for cancellation fees:
- Delta Main Cabin tickets and higher for travel within the U.S.A, Puerto Rico, and USVI
- Delta Main Cabin and higher tickets available for travel from the United States, Canada or Europe to Africa, the Caribbean, and anywhere else in the world (including code share and joint venture partners).
- Tickets for Basic Economy are not available.
Cancel a Refundable Ticket
You can request a refund if your plans change, or you purchased a refundable flight ticket. You must cancel or change your flight before departure.
How to cancel a refundable ticket:
- You should cancel your ticket before you leave.
- Log in to access My Trips or find your trip.
- Choose the flight that you wish to cancel.
- Click the “Need to Cancel?” button.
- Follow the steps by clicking on ‘Start Flight Cancellation.’
Request a Refund on a Refundable Ticket
To request a refund on a future trip, visit My trips. You must have a valid ticket that is refundable, and you can only purchase it with cash, credit card, or check. Your original payment method will receive your refund.

To receive a full refund of premiums, you must cancel your plan within 15 days (or as determined in your state of residency) and not have filed any claim or left on your trip. After this time, premiums cannot be refunded.

You can check the status of any refund requests you have already made for upcoming trips if you have submitted one.
24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation
For customers who book directly on delta.com and the Fly Delta app, we offer Risk-Free Cancellation. This means that you can cancel your e-ticket within 24 hours of booking. You will receive a full refund without any fees.
24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation Process:
- Log in to access My Trips or find your trip.
- Choose the trip that you wish to cancel.
- Click on the “Need to Cancel?” button Click the ‘Need to Cancel?’ button.
- Follow the steps by clicking on ‘Start Flight Cancellation.’
- You will receive a full refund that will automatically be applied to the original payment method.
Delta will refund your ticket if it is canceled within 24hrs of purchase. However, banks and credit card issuers can place a hold on funds on your debit or credit cards. For details on your card issuer’s policies, we encourage you to get in touch.
Delta Air Lines’ refund policy
You might be eligible for a refund depending on when you booked your ticket and the type of fare. An e-Credit towards your next flight may be available if a refund is not possible according to the airline’s policy.
Delta announced on Jan. 12, 2022, that all existing electronic credit cards will be valid until Dec. 31, 2023, for flights booked through 2024.
How to request a Delta refund:
There are two ways to initiate a Delta refund request, depending on when you request it.
Within 24 hours
Customers can cancel or request a refund online on any ticket within 24 hours of booking, at no extra cost. Fly Delta App or delta.com, then:
- Log in to select My Trips or, if you don’t have an online Delta account, choose Find Your Trip.
- Select the trip that you wish to cancel and click the Cancel Flight button.
- Follow the steps below to submit a Delta refund claim.
After 24 hours
After the risk-free cancellation period expires, you will need to use a different channel in order to request a Delta refund.
Online customers who have a refundable ticket may submit a Delta refund request by visiting delta.com. You can also cancel your trip using the same form as for nonrefundable tickets and apply online for an e-Credit.
Enter your first and last name, along with the 13-digit ticket code that was on your confirmation or receipt when you purchased your ticket.
