The Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO /gaIkoU/ is a private American insurance company that insures autos. Its headquarters are located at Chevy Chase, Maryland. It is second in the United States after State Farm as an auto insurance company. GEICO, a Berkshire Hathaway wholly owned subsidiary, provides coverage for more that 24 million motor cars owned by over 15 million policyholders as of 2017. GEICO offers private passenger automobile insurance in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The insurance agency sells policies via local agents called GEICO Field Representatives. They can also be contacted by phone through licensed insurance agents or through their website. Jake Wood, an English actor, voices the mascot of GEICO. He is a gold-dust day gecko with Cockney accent. GEICO has made many commercials to entertain viewers and is well-known in popular culture.
Despite having the name “government” in it, GEICO is a private corporation. It has never been a government agency. Leo Goodwin Sr., and Lillian Goodwin, his wife, founded the company in 1936 to sell automobile insurance to federal employees.
GEICO also offers property and umbrella insurance. However, the company’s risk is transferred to third-party companies. GEICO acts as an “insurance agent” and has a separate customer service team that deals with the umbrella and property policies.

Why did I receive a cancellation notice?
Cancellation notices will be sent when:
- Your payment due date has passed.
- The amount owed has not been paid.
These notices will inform you of the last day that we can receive your payment to you in order to avoid a lapse or insurance coverage.
An inability to pay your insurance premiums or lapse in coverage could make it difficult for you to obtain future insurance. You may be subject to fines or suspensions of registration and driver’s licenses by your state. These notices don’t include late charges.
