How do I cancel a flight?

Cancelling a portion of your trip or your additional options is possible by asking for a refund. It all depends on the route you choose your travel class and the ticket type. How much you receive a refund will depend on these factors.

Are you not able to fly with KLM? You will most likely request a refund for your ticket. We will explain how you can request a refund, and when you are eligible.
How do I request a refund?
Our online refund system allows you to request a cash reimbursement for any portion of your trip that was not used.
The system will determine if you are eligible for a complete cash refund or a portion thereof. However, you can call us to verify your eligibility.
Within 7 days, your request will be processed. All flights booked under your request for a refund will be cancelled immediately. We ask that you request a refund if your flight is already scheduled for the future. If you do not, the cabin crew may still expect that you board. This could cause delays for other passengers.

You didn’t book through KLM. If you booked through a travel agent, unfortunately you can’t use our online refund service. As they will have all the necessary information to arrange your refund, we recommend that you contact your travel agent. Their website has contact information. Taxes at the airport
Even if your ticket is non-refundable, we recommend that you always request a refund. You can get the airport taxes back if you don’t board your flight.
Cancellation or delay of flight:
In the following situations, you can request a cash reimbursement for your KLM flight:
- You were not able to take an alternate flight because your flight was cancelled.
- Your flight from the United States to Europe was delayed by more than 90 minutes. You were able to cancel your flight and return on the same day.
- Because of a schedule change that was at least three hours long, you decided to not take your flight.
- Because your KLM connecting flight was delayed by more than five hours, you didn’t want the hassle of flying to your destination.
If you need to cancel your flight:
you can request a refund in cash within 24 hours of booking.
Are you booking your flight more than 24 hours in advance? If so, are you flying Premium Comfort Class or Economy Class? To determine if you are eligible for a refund, check your ticket type. You will not receive a refund for the booking fee, reissue fees (if applicable) and any payment surcharges.
- Non-refundable for Standard or Light Tickets
- Flex ticket: Refundable, free of charge or for a fee depending on the fare paid.
Are you traveling in Business Class? We offer refundable fares. These conditions can vary by flight. The conditions will be displayed when you book your flight, or in your confirmation email.
Extensive circumstances:
You might have to cancel your trip or delay it because of circumstances beyond our control.
You can ask for a ticket extension, a travel coupon with the same value of the ticket or, in certain cases, a refund of the original payment.
Travel voucher (before outbound departure):
- You are unable to travel if you have a medical reason.
- If a passenger’s immediate family member has died, it is a sad event.
Extension of the ticket validity after outbound departure
- You are unable to travel if you have a medical reason.
- If a passenger’s immediate family member has died, it is a sad event.
- Travel companions who pass away during your trip may be able to help you.
Refunds up to 50% of the original payment:
- The local government denied your visa application.
- In the unfortunate case that the passenger dies
You can request a refund if an extraordinary refund is not possible due to your circumstances.
The non-refundable amount can be claimed to your travel insurance.
You may be asked to prove extraordinary circumstances. Please keep any documentation and certificates that you might need.

Fare difference:
If you cancel your upgrade request, you will receive a full refund.
