How to cancel your credit card

Cancelling a credit card is a good idea for certain circumstances, but not always. This article will explain how to cancel a credit card and what factors you should consider before cancelling.

These are the six steps that you need to take in order to cancel your credit card:

  • Balance paid
  • Redeem your rewards
  • Call issuer
  • Send a letter
  • Examine your credit report
  • You can destroy your card

Six steps to cancel your credit card:

1. Balance paid

To avoid paying additional fees, you will need to pay the entire balance off before you cancel your card. Some issuers allow you to close your account and not incur new fees. Your credit score may be affected if you forget you have it and stop paying the balance.

After your balance has been paid, you can check to see if your card has automatic payments or subscriptions and transfer these to another card.

2. Redeem your rewards

Redeem any rewards not used on your account. You may be able transfer the rewards to your partner or another card if you are unable to redeem them.

3. Call issuer

To cancel your card, call your credit card company. You may be offered a counteroffer for the card to remain open. If you aren’t sure that you want to close the card, you can say no and move on. It is important to confirm that there is no balance on your card.

4. Send a letter

You will receive a cancellation request letter detailing your initial request and your name, address, phone number, credit card information, and following up with your call.

5. Examine your credit report

To make sure your card was closed, and you have no outstanding balance, you will need to check your credit reports between 30 and 45 days.

6. You can destroy your card

You must ensure that your card is destroyed completely so that no one can access it. If the card is plastic, use scissors or a shredder. Ask your issuer about a card recycling program for metal cards.

What is the average time it takes for a refund on a credit-card?

After you return the item to the retailer you will receive a credit statement on your credit card account. The statement credit will appear on your online credit card account in a few days. However, the exact timeframe will depend on the merchant and your credit card issuer. It should appear on your monthly statement in one to two billing cycles.

How does a refund show up on a credit card?

If you had a balance on your credit cards before the return, it would appear as credit on your account and reduce your unpaid balance.

If you have paid off all of your credit card balances before making the return, the statement will be listed on your credit card with a negative balance. The credit issuer is obligated to you for this amount, since you have already paid the balance. You can use the card as normal and the credit will reduce your payments towards future purchases. Alternately, you may also send a request to your credit provider if you would like your credit to be returned in the form a check, or statement credit.

What is the process of returns on a credit card?

The retailer will process the return of a product purchased with a credit card through your credit issuer. The retailer validated your credit card details, checked to make sure your card was still active, and then processed payment through the credit card company.

To return an item you’ll need store credit or the original credit card you used to purchase it. You can request a cash refund from some retailers if you use a debit card to process the return transaction. However, you won’t be able do this with credit cards.
