United Airlines Refund policy

  • If your ticket was purchased through United within the last 24 hours, and you complete your purchase at least one week before your scheduled departure, it may be eligible for waiver of cancellation or change fees.
  • Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed, but they are eligible to receive a full refund within 24 hours of purchase provided that you have completed your purchase at least one week before the scheduled departure date.
  • You can cancel your reservation and get a refund if your ticket qualifies.

  • In June 2020, we made our refund guidelines more flexible. If you were affected by a major united schedule disruption, and you have not been granted a refund within the timeframe of March 1, 2020, to June 6, 2020, and you no longer wish to use your travel credits, please complete the refund form. We will review your claim and determine if you are eligible for a reimbursement.
  • Any fare that offers refunds may allow for a refund to be requested. A cancellation fee may be applicable depending on the fare purchased. Most tickets are nonrefundable and cannot be refunded. The value of your ticket might be eligible for an application towards the cost of a new ticket, but this will be subject to a fee. Except for tickets purchased before December 31, 2022, that are valid for 12 months, the validity of tickets is extended to December 31, 2023. Travel must be completed by December 31, 2023. Travel must begin within 12 months of the outbound travel date.
  • There are many variables that will affect the amount of your refund. Partially traveled tickets will receive a prorated refund based on the rules and segments flown. If applicable, fees and surcharges will not be refunded.
  • Refunds for credit cards will be processed within 7 business days. All other refunds will take 20 business days from the date of request
  • The refund will be returned to the original payment method.

Refunds will be credited back to the original method of payment. It may take up to seven days for your credit card to receive a refund. For information on refunds that do not appear within a billing cycle, contact your credit card company. All other forms of payments may take up to 20 business days to process a refund.

If your ticket qualifies for refund, it will be credited to the original payment method unless you request an electronic certificate. We will process your request within 14 business days. International tickets may have a different refund policy.

How to cancel or change your flight in United Airlines

How to Change Your Flight

1 Go to “My trips

To retrieve your flight, go to united.com and click on the “My trips” tab.

2 Choose the flight that you wish to change

To make the changes, click on the “Change flight” button below the flight.

  • Destination or date of travel
  • Add a flight
  • Retire a flight

3 Choose your new flight

Choose “Continue” to choose a new flight option.

4 Book your next trip

Continue booking to confirm your new flight. A difference in fare could apply, even if the change fee has been waived.

How to cancel your flight, rebook or reschedule later

1 Go to “My trips

To retrieve your flight, enter the confirmation number for your trip and the last name of your traveler.

2 Choose “Cancel flight”

This option is located at the top right-hand corner of your screen.

3 Confirm your cancellation

Select “Confirm cancellation.”
