Refund Policies and Process

COVID-19 ensures that most refunds for flights are processed within 12 weeks. Refunds may take longer depending on which airline.

All refunds for hotels, cars, and activities, even if they are part of a package, will be processed within the normal timeframe of 24 hours after cancellation. Remember that your bank or payment provider will determine when funds are available in your account.

How it works

  • It may take Expedia up to 24 hours for your refund to be processed. Once this has occurred, your bank or any payment service (like PayPal) will handle the rest. It may take up to 7 business days for them to credit your account and up to 2 billing cycles for the credit to appear on your statement.
  • The refund will be credited to the original payment method. If you have paid with your debit card, the money will be refunded to that method. We will send you an email containing all the details about your refund amount and when it will be sent to you.
  • Expedia will not refund you if your credit card statement contains a charge from a third-party (e.g., a low-cost airline, rental car agency, or cruise line). To inquire about refunds, contact the third party if this is the case.
  • You will be reimbursed for any partial or full payment you have made, less any fees. Imagine that you had paid USD 200 deposit for your hotel but then you had to cancel. You’d get USD 180 back if the hotel charged a USD 20 cancellation fee.

Here are the basics of cancellation fees

  • If points were used to pay the entire amount of your booking and you have been charged a cancellation fee it will be deducted from your points balance.
    Let’s say, for example, that you used 1,500 points of your 2,000 points as payment to cover your entire trip. Assuming that the cancellation fee is USD 20 per person, points will be converted into points and taken from 500 remaining points.
  • If you paid for your booking using points or a credit card, cancellation fees will be deducted from the points portion first and then the credit card portion if applicable.If you used all of your 2,000 points to pay your trip and then used your credit card to make the rest, the cancellation fee will be deducted from your points balance. If the cancellation fee is USD 20 then you will receive 1,980 points back to your points account.

Flying

  • Did you cancel your reservation within 24 hours? Certain flight bookings can be eligible for a full reimbursement.
  • Can’t cancel a non-refundable ticket? Instead of receiving your refund, you might be eligible for a flight credit that can be used to book future flights.

Hotels

  • Most hotels will refund your entire payment if you cancel within the cancellation deadline.
  • Some hotel rooms cannot be canceled, so you will not get your money back.
  • You won’t get a refund if you cancel a hotel reservation that is non-refundable or cancel after the cancellation deadline.
  • If you cancel before the hotel’s cancellation deadline and still see the charge on your credit card statement from them, contact the hotel to get your refund.

Cars

Cruises

You can cancel most cruise bookings up to 90 days prior to departure for a full refund.

Activities

Cancellations received before the cancellation deadline can be used to get a full refund on most activity bookings. Keep in mind, however, that not all activities can be refunded.

Expedia’s Cancellation Policies

Expedia’s cancellation policies vary depending on the type of vacation service you choose.

To cancel or modify a booking, you will need to either sign into your Expedia account (if you have one) or contact their customer service department.

Expedia flight cancellations

Expedia allows you to cancel any flight you have booked.

  1. To visit the website, enter www.expedia.com in your web browser.
  2. Sign into your account.
  3. Click on the My Trips menu.
  4. Click on the itinerary link to choose the item that includes the flight reservation you want to cancel.
  5. Click Manage Booking.
  6. Click Cancel Flight

These are some tips to remember when cancelling or changing a flight.

  • Expedia allows you to cancel your flight within 24 hours and receive a full refund.
  • The airline will generally charge fees for changing a flight. Other restrictions and rules may apply, including the requirement to book the new flight as the primary passenger with the same airline, or paying any difference in ticket prices if the ticket is more costly than the previous one.

Expedia allows you to cancel hotel reservations.

  1. Visit www.expedia.com using your preferred web browser.
  2. Sign into your account.
  3. Click on the My Trips menu.
  4. To cancel a hotel booking that you have already made, click on the itinerary.
  5. Click on Manage Booking.
  6. Click Cancel Room.

To change a hotel reservation made through Expedia

  1. Register for an account
  2. Click on My Trips.
  3. To select the hotel booking that you want to modify, click on the itinerary.
  4. Click on Manage Booking.
  5. You can click Edit to make any changes you want to make.

 Here are some tips for cancelling or changing hotel reservations:

  • Most cases will not allow you to get a refund on a hotel room cancelled. This is due to the rules and restrictions that the hotel has in place. These are listed at the bottom.
  • Hotel rooms at the “Unpublished Rate” cannot be cancelled or changed.
  • Expedia won’t charge you for cancelling or changing your hotel room. However, the hotel may, depending on its rules and restrictions, do so. Many hotels will charge fees if you cancel or change your reservation within 48 hours of checking in. These fees can be avoided by acting quickly.
  • Although most hotel rooms can be modified without charge, changes to certain aspects, such as the type of room, number of guests or check-in/check-out dates, may incur a fee.

You must cancel your reservation and rebook it if you need to make changes.

Expedia car rental cancellations

To cancel a reservation for a rental car that you have already made:

  1. Visit www.expedia.com.
  2. Log in to access your account
  3. Click on My Trips.
  4. To select the itinerary that includes the rental car reservation you wish to cancel click on it.
  5. Click Manage Booking.
  6. Click Cancel This Car.
  7. To confirm, please review the verification notice that you will be receiving on the next page.

Keep these things in mind when cancelling a rental vehicle reservation:

  • Most car rental reservations can be cancelled without penalty.
  • After you have booked your rental car, you cannot cancel the reservation. However, you can cancel the reservation and make a new one.
